Amateur historians and war buffs will love this one! It's a 1940 hardcover copy of Lion Feuchtwanger's "Paris Gazette" - an objective story regarding the Nazi regime by the famous exiled German writer. Written and published during World War Two, it is set in 1935, and contains actual events mixed in with the fiction. It is translated from the German by Edwin & Lilla Muir, and was published by Hutchinson & Co Ltd (Great Britain). Though it mentions "first cheap edition" on the dust-jacket (and no other editions inside), this large hardcover would have been printed within a year of the original German version, as the author's preface is from July 1939.

As you can see from the photos below, this book has survived well since the Second World War. The cover is in great health, but has the remainder of the dust-jacket pasted to the front, and a book club sticker on the back. Also, while the spine is in excellent condition and holds all the pages well, the title and author are hand-written in yellow (as obviously only the dust-jacket had these). These are just cosmetic faults; the only real minor flaws with the cover are a couple of slightly-turned corners! The insides of the covers look great, and there are no splits anywhere!

All 695 pages are accounted for and secure, with the only small rips being one tiny one on the edge of a page, and a bump to the top of two pages (one of which is just a catalogue page at the back anyway). The only creases are some once-folded corners (and a few very slightly turned ones), and the pages generally lie nice and flat. There are no scribbles, except for a signature and some numbers in pencil on the title page. While the thick coarse paper has allowed a fair bit of yellowing over the decades, all text is of course quite readable, and the only stains are some faint moisture marks here and there. Spotting in pretty much confined to the first and last couple of pages, and the only other thing to mention really is that the blurb from the dust-jacket has been pasted on the blank page opposite the first page of the story.

Like I said, this book is still going strong, and these flaws are pretty trivial (hey, I'd rather be pedantic than have an unhappy customer!). It would make a great addition to your collection, whether you are into WWII, antique books, classic adventures, Lion Feuchtwanger in particular, or just a great tale of intrigue and suspense.
