Up for grabs is this antique ornate hardcover copy of Oliver Wendell Holmes' classic tale, "Elsie Venner" (originally published 1861). This beautiful little piece features intricate tooling all over the front cover, with both tooling and gilding on the spine. There is also a frontispiece depicting an action scene from the story, and a woodcut on the title page. It was published by T. Nelson & Sons, but is undated; extensive searching has led me to the date of 1883 (I originally thought 1890-1905, but one description of the same book and pictures of other books published in the same year by them is almost empirical that it was in fact 1883).As you can see from the photos below, this little gem is doing great for its age. The cover of fine red mylar has seen little surface or edge wear, with only a bit of bumping on the corners. The gold titling is still intact and shiny, and there are no splits along the spine or anything. In fact, this book feels as sturdy as they come, and the pages are quite secure. All 480 pages are not only intact, but most are free of the usual flaws. While there has admittedly been some yellowing over the years, mainly around the edges, the only spotting is to be found just inside the covers. There are no rips, and the only creases are a handful of once-folded corners. There are no stains, but there is some minimal underlining on five pages of the first chapter.Like I said, this book is in great condition for its antiquity. It would make a great addition to the bookshelf of any avid antique book collector, OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES fan, or admirer of classic literature in general. This item is going out cheap,
so hurry up and grab it before someone else beats you to it!
