Up for grabs is this 1879 copy of "JOHNSON" by Leslie Stephen (and edited by John Morley). It is of course a biography on the life and works of Samuel Johnson, the literary genius of the 1700's. This particular one is a cloth softback from the English Men Of Letters series published by Macmillan & Co (London).

As you can see from the photos below, this beauty is doing very well indeed for its 124 years! The red cloth cover has been preserved by a plastic covering, underneath which are only some minor imperfections. Other than a narrow, 1-inch long stain along the front side-edge, it looks pretty clean. There is some minimal surface wear or scratching, but the edges are basically free of wear. There is a bit more wear along the edges of the spine, and a tiny bit looks to have been ripped off the top, but it is otherwise still doing its job well.

The black insides of the covers look incredibly well preserved, though there is a library card and date-sheet stuck inside the back. There are library stamps and signatures on the first two pages (a cover page and the title page), but other than that, this book is free of flaws.

All 200 pages are not only accounted for and securely intact, but free of rips, creases, stains, mildew-spots, scribbles, and stamps. Have a look and you will see there has hardly even been any yellowing over the last century and a quarter! Not only is this gem free of the usual imperfections of books of this antiquity, but it's doing better than books I have from the 1980's! About the only other things that could pass as flaws would be a very slight warping of the pages, and here and there between pages you can see glimpses of the binding (but I stress this is minimal, and the binding is of course quite solid). Like I said, this book is going great, and it will continue to do so for many decades to come.

This book is a must for Samuel Johnson fans, and collectors of biographies and antique books. This item is going out cheap, so hurry up and grab it before someone else beats you to it!
